Why is Myopia Control important?

Maintaining good eye health is important as a child's prescription keeps changing. We use advanced techniques to slow down the progression of the child's prescription, which is also known as Myopia. If the glasses prescription continues to increase, this would increase your child’s risk for getting a retina hole, tear, or detachment. Depending on the location of a hole, tear, or detachment, this could result in permanent compromise in vision.

At Halsted Eye Boutique, we understand that slowing down the progression of your child’s glasses prescription is key to decreasing their risk of developing cataracts and glaucoma earlier in life. Our team of eye care specialists are dedicated to providing the best care to ensure that your child’s prescription is controlled, and they remain eligible for LASIK later in life. With our expertise and guidance, your child can avoid any potential risks associated with high glasses prescriptions. Therefore, it's important to get it treated early on to prevent any future risks.

Why Does Myopia Target Children and Early Teens?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is an eye disorder where the length of the eye is too long from the back to front and can also be caused by an abnormally curved cornea. Typically, myopia becomes obvious in the developmental stages of life, between the ages of six to 14. It is most often seen in children and early teens, making Halsted Eye Boutique's comprehensive eye exams especially important for young patients. This progressive disorder has symptoms that may appear as any of the following problems:

  • Blurry Vision

  • Frequent squinting

  • Unable to see the white board from a distance

  • Rubbing of eyes

  • Complaints of recurring headaches

How can Myopia be Treated/Slowed?

One of the ways to slow down the progression of myopia is through Optometry. Our office is proud to be certified in the fitting of MiSight contact lenses, an isolated FDA approved form of Myopia Control Treatment. These are very comfortable soft multifocal contact lenses which help to encourage stability of a prescription. MiSight contact lenses are the only FDA approved form of Myopia Control Treatment.

  • Any increases in prescription seen with these lenses are far less as compared to studies of children who opted not to use these lenses.
  • These lenses are child friendly and our Myopia Control Program patients start wearing lenses as young as eight years old.
